In the three months prior to interview, 63 per cent of adults in Great Britain (29 million) had accessed the Internet in February 2006. This represents 93 per cent of the adults who have ever accessed the Internet.

The most common place to access the Internet was at home (86 per cent), 46 per cent accessed at work, 28 per cent at another person's home, 16 per cent at a place of education and 10 per cent at a public library.

Of those adults who have ever used the Internet, 67 per cent have bought or ordered goods or services, with adults aged 25-44 the most likely to buy on-line (73 per cent). The main reasons given for not shopping on-line were; having no need (48 per cent), preferring to shop in person and/or like to see the product (46 per cent) and security concerns (34 per cent). In the three months prior to interview, 49 per cent of men who had used the Internet had done so for Internet banking compared with 35 per cent of women.

Of those who have used a computer and/or the Internet in the three months prior to interview,65 per cent of men and 48 per cent of women obtained their computer or Internet skills through self study; 51 per cent of men and 52 per cent of women through informal assistance from friends, colleagues and relatives; 29 per cent of men and 39 per cent of women through a formalised educational and 24 per cent of men and 13 per cent of women using books and CD-ROMs etc.
