Audata has managed a project to assemble a digital archive for
the National Archives of England, Wales and the United Kingdom.
The digital archive is able to receive and process digital records
and to extract metadata automatically; to store those records securely;
and to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, availability and
accountability of the records at all times.
The digital archive was required to protect the records from
data loss due to media degradation and obsolescence, and from
information loss due to data structure obsolescence. This was
achieved by a regime of continual verification (storage management),
assessment of records acquired, and selective migration to long-lived
formats.
Audata has also managed the development of an application for
gathering and coordinating information about the file formats
used to store records, in government departments (including the
hardware and software environments in which records were created).
This will be used to support the long-term preservation of the
records themselves after they have been transferred for permanent
storage. The project involved software procurement, development
and testing and was managed to PRINCE2 standard.
